Spinal cord injury

A spinal cord injury is damage to any part of the spinal cord or nerves at the end of the spinal canal.Spinal cord injury may result from damage to the vertebrae,ligaments or disks of the spinal column or to the spinal cord itself. A traumatic spinal cord injury may result from a sudden, traumatic blow to your spine that fractures,dislocates,crushes or compresses one or more vertebrae.A non traumatic spinal cord injury may be caused by arthritis, cancer, inflammation, infections or disc degeneration of spine.

SCI often causes permanent changes in strength, sensation, muscle tone and other body functions below the site of injury. So physiotherapy plays important role in rehabilitation of the person.It aims at normalising the muscle tone, improving the ROM, improving strength and endurance,, improve balance and coordination through exercises.
